6 Day Tour from Marrakech to Fez

DAY 1: Marrakech – Tizi n’Tichka – Ouarzazate

After breakfast, we depart early for Ouarzazate, a historic crossroads where caravans once set off toward sub-Saharan Africa. Known as the “Gateway to the Sahara,” the journey takes us through the stunning landscapes of the High Atlas Mountains. We cross the Tizi n’Tichka pass, reaching an altitude of 2,260 meters. We will stop at the famous Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, located 30 kilometers from Ouarzazate—a magnificent fortress built of red earth and a designated UNESCO World Heritage site.

Continuing to Ouarzazate, we visit the Taourirt Kasbah, the former residence of the famous Pacha Glaoui. Its painted ceilings, arches, and intricate ironwork and woodwork have also made it a UNESCO site. This visit offers insight into the lifestyle of the Pacha (Governor) in old Moroccan politics, including the history of his family and household. In the afternoon, enjoy a private tour of Atlas Corporation Studios, a world-renowned cinematic center home to blockbusters such as *Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra* and the Oscar-winning *Gladiator*. Overnight stay in a hotel or Riad in Ouarzazate.

DAY 2: Ouarzazate – Skoura – Kalaat M’Gouna – Dades Gorges – Todra Gorges

We depart Ouarzazate for the Todra Gorges via the “Route of a Thousand Kasbahs,” passing fascinating “clay castles.” We cross the town of Kalaat M’Gouna, the “City of Roses,” famous for its rose products and its annual Rose Festival in May. Passing near Boumalne Dades, we head into the valley to see the incredible “Monkey Fingers” rock formations and the 19th-century Kasbah of Ait Youl. We then head toward Tinghir and the Todra Valley, enjoying panoramic views of ancient Berber villages. We will stop at the base of the massive red cliffs for a walk through the lush canyon vegetation—a favorite spot for rock climbers. Overnight stay in a local guesthouse.

DAY 3: Todra Gorges – Erfoud – Rissani – Merzouga (Camel Trek)

Leaving the mountains of Todra, we enter the open desert plains characterized by volcanic rock. We cross palm groves to reach Erfoud and Rissani for lunch. After a brief visit, we head toward the village of Merzouga, where our camels await to take us on an exploration of the mysterious Erg Chebbi sand sea. We spend the night in a traditional Berber tent (jaima) under the stars, accompanied by traditional music and dancing.

DAY 4: Merzouga – Erg Chebbi – Desert Activities

After breakfast, we explore the village and oasis of Merzouga. We will enjoy a live performance of Gnawa music, played by descendants of people originally from Sudan, and learn about their spiritual lifestyle. We continue to a panoramic viewpoint of the Erg Chebbi dunes to witness how the colors change with the sunlight. Next, we visit the ruins of the old village of Mirdani and the former coal mines of M’fis, where many locals once worked. We then head into the deep desert to meet Bedouin families living in traditional tents in the Kem Kem Hamada. After sharing tea with them, we visit fossil quarries and the Tissardmine oasis before returning to your Merzouga hotel or Riad in the afternoon.

DAY 5: Merzouga – Ziz Valley – Midelt

After sunrise and breakfast, we travel toward Midelt, passing through the Ziz Valley—a dramatic volcanic structure carved into the rock. We cross the cities of Erfoud and Errachidia before reaching the foothills of the Middle Atlas. We arrive in Midelt, a city famous for its apple production. Overnight stay in a local Kasbah-style hotel.

DAY 6: Midelt – Azrou – Ifrane – Fes

This leg of the journey offers spectacular views of the Middle and High Atlas mountains. We stop at the famous cedar forest to see the Barbary macaque monkeys. Continuing through the mountains, we pass through Berber villages and towns like Immouzer Kandar and Ifrane. Known as the “Switzerland of Morocco,” Ifrane is a beautiful mountain resort and the summer residence of the Moroccan monarchy. After a stop for photos or a drink, we head to the Imperial City of Fes, where we will stay in a Riad in the historic heart of the city.

Solo teníamos un fin de semana y este tour fue perfecto. Dormir en el desierto es algo que hay que hacer una vez en la vida. El guía fue súper amable y el 4x4 muy cómodo.

6 Day Tour from Marrakech to Fez

At Viajemos Marruecos, we recommend this option for those who want to avoid long hours of driving. Having a full day to explore the Merzouga area (Day 4) allows for a much deeper connection with the nomads and local culture, making the trip a life-changing experience rather than just a transfer.

Since you will be crossing three mountain ranges (High, Middle, and Anti-Atlas) and the desert, the temperature will vary greatly. It is essential to wear comfortable clothing and dress in layers. Even in summer, nights in the Sahara and Midelt can be cool, so a light jacket is always necessary.

It is fascinating for both film buffs and curious visitors alike. You can see the actual sets of major productions such as Asterix and Cleopatra and Gladiator. Your guide will explain how the unique light in this part of Morocco has made Ouarzazate Hollywood's favorite film set in Africa.
